Today is Saturday, April 7th and coincidentally today I am sharing my personal selection of 7 special events for Colorado 4/20 weekend 2018. While it was insanely hard to narrow it down to just 7 events, I feel this mix truly has something 4/everyone! STONERS B WARNED. 420 has now GONE FULL WEEKEND in CO and scanning the horizon it appears it could turn full “bongathon”. =)
My “party mom” advice: take it easy breezy this 4/20 and remember slow and steady wins the golden green turtle race. Plan now to designate a driver for any events you are going to consume ANY sort of substance at. Make sure if you partake you take part in making sure you make it home safe.
And now for a little flashback to my first year living and blogging in Colorado.
Why? Because… “The seeds of the future can be found in the soil of the past.”
I remember the day I met Chris Anderson & The “Sunsquabi Boys” in Boulder, CO, the year was 2012 and I was a freshman in College. A mutual friend I met at JWU Denver campus that had gone to high school with Chris introduced me to the group. She invited me to an STS9 show that they were all going too at the chilly tail end of December at The Fillmore in Denver. I remember rocking the night away at numerous totally EPIC SunSquabi jam “after parties” on The Hill that year.
Though time has challenged all of us to grow and change to better fill the shoes of our larger SOUL PURPOSES, it was on that day 12/30/12, that the “Sunsquabi Boys” became part of my musical SOUL FAMILY and STS9 became one of my SOUL FAMILIES favorite bands.
I had no clue then that time would do such a diligent job at watering the lovingly planted SunSquabi seed, shifting and transforming the band for the better. The house parties I grew to love quickly were quickly traded for shows at some of Colorado’s best venues.
How beautiful it has been to witness some of my favorite musicians BLOOM under the spotlight of venues like Red Rocks. How special it has been to watch the band that I once attended CU house parties with EXPAND and start to sell out larger and larger spaces like The Fillmore. For all of these reasons and so many more, my #1 event for 4/20 weekend in Colorado is OPIUO + Syzygy Orchestra/ SunSquabi at Red Rocks, on Saturday, April 21st, 2018!
The rest of the events on this list are in RANDOM ORDER and are simply my personal favorite picks for 420 events in Colorado this year. While there are TONS of other events happening all over the state for 4/20 week in CO I have hand selected those on this list to appeal to a variety of different types of art and music lovers.
The list includes a “Target Audience” that I have pre-determined based on years of experience marketing different events in the Colorado scene.
The list showcases a wide range of locations and ticket price points that should allow most Colorado 4/20 goers to find at least one event that matches both their personal style and budget.

Feeling incredibly hyped to announce I will be working with some of the best in the industry to promote the 2018 SONIC BLOOM festival! Finding & falling in love, making friends, learning, growing, and working my ass off for #SONICBLOOM has been one of the greatest challenges yet most fulfilling joys in my life so far. This year will be my 6th time being present at the festival and my second year as official PROMO TEAM STAFF!
The first time I earned a ticket toSONIC BLOOM was in 2013, the very last year the festival was held at Shadows Ranch in Georgetown, Colorado. I applied to be on the street team that is managed by Jon Eisenberg aka Blackspy Marketing. Jon and I have worked together for years now and I have so much respect for what he does. If you want to join a killer street team and go to the best shows ever in exchange for promotion work, visit Blackspy Marketing.com & SIGN UP NOW. ME AT SONIC BLOOM 2013 – THE 1ST YEAR I STREET TEAMED!
BEFORE, the 2013 festival in April 2013, I was INSPIRED to created THE SONIC BLOOM FESTIVAL COMMUNITY group on facebook. Facebook groups had just started to take off in popularity at that point and I guess I figured it would be a way to keep in touch the “few friends” I had met at the festival. Nearly six years and six thousand+ community group members later, I manifested the job of Social Media Strategist & Community Outreach Manager for the 2018 festival season. YAY! I LOVE MY JOB!
How did I EARN my SONIC BLOOM festival ticket in the years 2014 & 2015? I joined the STREET TEAMAND I HELPED BUILD & MANAGEthe live glassblowing ART INSTALLATIONat the festival. It was in these years that I earned the name” Glassy Mermaid”. I love glass art and got to blow glass live at the festival in the years I went as part of this art installation team. The live-glassblowing installation is one of the very best installations at SONIC BLOOM and is a MUST SEE!

In 2016, I was single & sad because my house had just burned down. Ironically, IT WAS NOT A GLASSBLOWING ACCIDENT. LOL! I knew I needed to GET THE FUCK OUT OF MY HEAD AND FOCUS ON BUILDING SOMETHING NEW. So I signed up as an unpaid volunteer and was placed in the production office because of my prior work in the office setting for ARISE Festival. At the time I lived with the Rainbow Lightning Children’s Village lead coordinator Taylor Martin and her partner DJ Rob Treaphort. I want to take this moment to say THANK YOU to Taylor & Rob for helping me heal from the tragedy of my house burning down and being my best festival friends in 2016 at SONIC BLOOM. You both helped me heal so much from the pain I was going through and rediscover my inner child.

Later that year in December 2016 I was added on Facebook and approached by the producer Jamie Janover. After sharing my extensive backstory and sharing how much the festival had changed my life, I was offered a paying gig on the festival social media promotion team. In 2017, I worked on the production team as a Social Media Strategist and consultant pre-festival and on-site during the event. I loved creating the Instagram story and can’t wait to do an even better one this year.

HERE IS THE DESCRIPTION ON THE EVENT PAGE: Redefining the possibilities of modern music, The Russ Liquid Test fuses the raw vitality of classic funk and the inventive sound design of the electronic production. Songwriter/producer and renowned brass specialist Russell Scott heads up the New Orleans-based band. Guitarist Andrew Block and drummer Deven Trusclair round things out, with each providing a distinct musical background deeply rooted in the New Orleans jazz scene. Their debut EP 1984 featured an eclectic array of guest collaborators such as Mr. Lif and Ivan Neville—successfully creating an auditory canvas to forge The Russ Liquid Test’s irresistibly soulful future-vintage stylings.
A kinetic energy infuses each track on 1984. Giving way to a mixture of funk/jazz/electro, The Russ Liquid Test evokes a kaleidoscope of textures, senses, and moods. Featuring Ivan Neville on keyboards and the Funky Meters’ Russell Batiste Jr. on drums, the effervescent and synth-heavy title track “speaks about the current state of America from the perspective of an outsider,” as described by Scott. Lead single “Honesty,” meanwhile, finds The Russ Liquid Test slipping into a woozy psychedelia, offset by a brilliantly structured dichotomy introduced in its second-line-inspired groove.
At the heart of The Russ Liquid Test is an improv-driven musicality that began with Scott’s taking up classical piano. After spending several years playing in a jazz quintet on cruise ships and touring with psychedelic ska band Uprite Dub Orchestra, his one-of-a-kind artistry was unveiled in the genre-busting musical performance group MarchFourth Marching Band. Capable of playing the trumpet and saxophone, Scott quickly began experimenting with electronic music, eventually adopting the moniker of Russ Liquid. As his full-length debut, 2013’s Foreign Frequency showcased a forward-thinking mentality and fearless vision, anchored by an incomparable knowledge of music as a whole. “I wanted new colors to paint with,” says Scott of his foray into electronic music. “I kind of look at the electronic world as this whole other color palette, compared to the traditional sounds we’ve been working with for the past however many years.”
While on tour with Gramatik in 2014, Scott crossed paths with Block and discovered the duo’s shared musical tastes and philosophies. A South Florida native, Block grew playing guitar in his local Pentecostal church. “I wasn’t religious, I just wanted to play at that church because the music there was amazing,” says Block. He later relocated to New Orleans, pursuing his dream of becoming a full-time musician. The guitarist’s legendary endeavors reached fellow purveyors of soul/funk/R&B, ranging from Pretty Lights to New Orleans icon Dr. John. Capable of collaborating and working as a solo artist without missing a beat, Block released his 2014 debut You Can Only Go Up From Here on Gramatik’s independent label Lowtemp.
In the making of 1984, The Russ Liquid Test compounded their potent chemistry by bringing in a lineup of equally impassioned musicians. “Coming from a background of playing in bands and then getting into electronic music, I’d really missed having that interaction with other musicians,” says Scott. “The most rewarding thing for me is being able to bounce ideas off other people, so that the music ends up having more than just one person’s vibe to it. Ultimately it lets you give the audience even more to connect with.”
The studio workhorses have already begun working on a sophomore EP. The Russ Liquid Test also presents a joyful sense of synergy in their high-powered live shows, with recent appearances including Shambhala Music Festival, Lightning in a Bottle, Summer Camp, and Sonic Bloom, among others. No matter the setting, a clear multidimensionality can always be heard in The Russ Liquid Test’s projects. “We want to make people feel good but also give them something to reflect with,” says Scott. “It’s not about just making party music or music that’s more introspective—it’s for the full gamut of human expression, and we want it to be just as dynamic as life itself.”

This year has been healing and powerful. Like a phoenix from the ashes, we have arisen from the yuck that was the year 2016. We looked that damn horse that bucked us off straight in the eyes, got back up, “got that dirt off our shoulders”, and proved ourselves this year. Not because the world was watching and it was the “chic” or “fashionable” thing to do, but because our health and survival depended on it. 2017 WENT BY FAST because most of us have been focused on the correction of some part of our lives we find inadequate.
Our search for “the good life” & “true love” has brought about some BIG CHANGES that, at times, have threatened to throw us out of balance with the true rhythm of our hearts. Yet the more we search for THE TRUTH the more we realize that the goal has been and always will be the same…
Healing of The Earth. Unity. Oneness. Serenity. PEACE & LOVE FOR ALL. THIS YEAR, NEXT YEAR, FOREVER.
The spiritual family I come from recognizes dance as a form of prayer. Dancing in the new year is a tradition as old as time. A celebration of transition into 2018 is clearly in order, but with so many choices you might be considering giving up a magical night out and making it a magical night in instead. With all of the craziness going on in the world right now, who could blame you?
Regardless of whether you go to one of the shows on this list or elect to do something different this year, my prayer for each of you is the same. As one of my favorite songs of all time goes,“I hope you dance”. My hope for each of you in the new year is that you never lose your sense of wonder. Take a deep breath, let love in, let the year 2017 slip away, and DANCE IN THE YEAR 2018.
